The original design of this system was based solely on improving performance and sound, while the system's internals were designed to increase flow and reflect the true Ferrari F1 sound.
Lighter and with better heat dissipation, this exhaust offers improved performance (better torque and throttle response).Made of T309 (1.4828) stainless steel (properties close to Inconel).Under certain driving conditions with the original bypass valve in the open position, reverse flow through the muffler causes overheating and damage to the headers of the Ferrari 355 cars. Under these conditions, once the exhaust gas valve is opened, the exhaust gases no longer flow through the main catalytic converter but mainly through the bypass.The exhaust gases flow out of the outlet leading to the main catalytic converter and generate vacuum. This causes the hot exhaust gases in the muffler to be drawn backwards through the main catalytic converter, further heating the gases.
The gases are then guided through the bypass and recirculated back into the muffler through the exhaust valve. When the exhaust valve is open, this gas flow circulates continuously, generating ever more heat. We believe this problem is known to Ferrari. For this reason, the F355 was converted from a 2.7 to a 5.2 engine in 1996, and the cylinder heads were modified precisely at the point where the vacuum is generated. But this measure did not solve the problem.
Now you can imagine that extreme backpressure would arise if all the exhaust gases from the engine and those drawn backwards had to flow through one exhaust valve. This is why the F355 does not deliver the power it claims. After some testing, it became clear to us that our theory was correct and that the bypass causes this problem. A single exhaust valve is insufficient and therefore generates a lot of heat due to back pressure. Our exhaust systems, regardless of whether they are racing or standard models, are designed so that the exhaust pipes from the main catalytic converter lead to the outer end pipes, and those from the bypass lead to the inner end pipes. These pipes are not connected to each other. Therefore, when vacuum is generated in the main catalytic converter, the hot exhaust gases cannot be recirculated.
Instead, the cold air through the outer end pipe is drawn back through the catalytic converter, the bypass, and the valve. Once the cold air mixes with the hot exhaust gases, the exhaust gas temperature drops, and so does the temperature of the entire system. Furthermore, the original single bypass valve did not allow enough gas to flow at full throttle. After recognizing this problem, CAPRISTO Exhausts decided to eliminate both problems with a new design.
