Heat Shields are made of a very heat resistant material, originally developed and used by NASA. This helps reduce radiant heat from exhaust manifolds and sports catalytic converters. The shields are heat resistant for temperatures up to 1300 degrees Celsius.
Reduced heat or temperatures in the engine bay improve performance. Cooler air boxes result in cooler air temperatures for the engine to "breathe". In turn, denser air produces more horsepower.
Since the outside of the hot, blinding exhaust is shielded from the surrounding environment, the shields also reduce the possibility of fires that can sometimes occur when fluids/oil come in contact with the exhaust system.
Heat shields can also be bolted onto headers without having to remove them.
Headers CANNOT be installed and used WITHOUT these heat shields.
